Veterinary Co-Ownership – Small Animal General Practice To Be Built in the Greater Salt Lake City, UT Area

JOB-5638

The Job Opportunity:

An established, veterinarian-led organization is seeking an experienced veterinarian who is ready to take the next step into practice ownership—whether that means building a new veterinary hospital from the ground up or purchasing and growing an existing private practice.

This opportunity is designed for a doctor who wants the autonomy, leadership, and long-term financial potential of ownership while having an experienced and supportive organization in their corner. Rather than navigating practice acquisition, startup development, recruiting, marketing, finance, human resources, and day-to-day business operations alone, the Partner Veterinarian will have access to an established infrastructure and experienced professionals who can help support the business side of ownership.

The goal is to give the veterinarian the opportunity to practice like an owner, lead like an owner, and build equity like an owner—without carrying every responsibility of traditional independent ownership alone.

The Partner Veterinarian will have meaningful influence over the clinical direction, team, culture, and growth of the hospital while maintaining a strong focus on evidence-based medicine, client relationships, and exceptional patient care.

For a veterinarian who has considered opening a hospital or purchasing an established practice but would prefer to do so with experienced business, operational, and financial support behind them, this opportunity offers an alternative path to private practice ownership.

Practice Information:

With years of experience supporting veterinarians who co-own with them, this organization knows how to help develop, acquire, and grow modern companion animal hospitals while preserving meaningful clinical leadership and ownership at the practice level.

For veterinarians interested in building a new hospital, this is an opportunity to help design everything that matters to you.  Instead of spending your first year in business, “wishing someone had told you something before it was too late” or kicking yourself for, “not having thought of something months ago,” you’ll work alongside an experienced development and operations team that has already built an organization with over 200 hospitals (with the vast majority being partner owned).  These talented individuals believe strongly in partnering with you to shape decisions about everything from your logo to your layout.  Together, you’ll make meaningful decisions about a wide range of topics including:

  • Hospital layout, design, and clinical workflow
  • Exam, treatment, surgical, and dental spaces
  • Diagnostic and medical equipment
  • Technology and practice systems
  • Pharmaceuticals and medical products stocked
  • Services and procedures offered
  • Medical protocols and standards of care
  • Staffing, team structure, and hospital culture

Experienced professionals will provide support throughout the process, including:

  • Site development, design, and construction
  • Equipment selection and procurement
  • Recruiting and team building
  • Marketing and community outreach
  • Finance, accounting, and budgeting
  • Human resources and hospital operations
  • Business development and strategic planning

For veterinarians interested in purchasing an existing private practice, support is also available throughout the acquisition and transition process, with the opportunity to build upon the hospital’s existing strengths while shaping its future direction.

In this organization, veterinarians bring the clinical vision and perspective of an owner, while an experienced team provides the infrastructure and business expertise to help turn that vision into a successful practice.

Role Responsibilities:

The Partner Veterinarian will serve as both a clinical leader and co-owner of a companion animal practice, with responsibilities that may include:

  • Helping establish or grow the hospital’s clinical vision and standards of care
  • Providing high-quality, evidence-based medical, surgical, dental, and preventive care
  • Maintaining meaningful clinical autonomy in patient care and medical decision-making
  • Building, mentoring, and developing a strong veterinary and support team
  • Creating a positive, collaborative workplace culture that supports engagement and retention
  • Developing lasting relationships with clients and the surrounding community
  • Collaborating with operational partners on recruiting, budgeting, staffing, marketing, and strategic planning
  • Reviewing hospital performance and participating in decisions that support responsible growth
  • Identifying opportunities to expand services, improve the client experience, and strengthen the practice
  • Helping guide the long-term clinical, cultural, and financial success of the hospital

Job Applicant Requirements:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited institution
  • Active veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for appropriate state licensure
  • At least four years of clinical veterinary experience
  • Previous leadership, mentorship, management, or team-development experience
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to evidence-based medicine and thoughtful client education
  • Interest in practice ownership, business development, and long-term hospital growth
  • Desire to build and maintain a positive, collaborative workplace culture
  • Comfort using technology to support patient care, client communication, and hospital operations
  • Fear Free certification, HABRI certification, or willingness to pursue applicable certification

Previous practice ownership experience is not required. This opportunity may be especially appealing to an experienced veterinarian who has considered ownership but would value guidance and infrastructure when evaluating an acquisition, developing a new hospital, or managing the business responsibilities associated with ownership.

Compensation & Benefits May Include:

  • Competitive base compensation based on experience and leadership responsibilities. This includes having a regular salary you help select (typically reflexive of the going market rate for a hospital leader) starting the day your hospital doors opens – not to mention other additional financial perks!
  • Meaningful equity and co-ownership opportunities
  • Opportunities ranging from minority equity participation to substantial partnership interests
  • Profit-sharing and distributions based on hospital performance
  • Financing assistance for qualified ownership candidates
  • Performance and leadership incentives
  • Long-term equity and wealth-building potential
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Retirement plan with employer contribution
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Continuing education allowance and paid CE time
  • Professional licensing, membership dues, and liability coverage
  • Leadership coaching and professional mentorship
  • Recruiting, marketing, financial, accounting, HR, and operational support
  • Access to a collaborative network of veterinary leaders and fellow practice partners
  • Significant clinical autonomy and influence over hospital culture, medicine, and operations

For the right veterinarian, this opportunity offers a path to owning and shaping a veterinary practice while benefiting from the resources, experience, and infrastructure of a larger organization—combining the entrepreneurial aspects of private practice ownership with a knowledgeable support team working alongside them.
