Few states tie veterinary medicine so closely to everyday life. Montana’s ranching heritage, strong horse culture and devoted pet owners give vets a varied caseload, and practices often serve communities spread across wide valleys and open plains. Vet jobs in Montana range from well-equipped small animal hospitals in growing mountain towns to mixed practices where a day can move from a vaccine appointment to a calving call.
Veterinary care reaches communities all over the state. These are some of the regions where it is most firmly established.
Billings and the Yellowstone Valley Montana’s largest city is a medical, retail and agricultural hub for much of south-central and eastern Montana. Companion animal hospitals serve a large urban and suburban population, while practices on the city’s edges see horses and cattle from the surrounding ranch country. The Rimrocks frame the city, and the Beartooth Mountains are an easy drive away.
Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley Home to the University of Montana and set where several river valleys meet, Missoula has an active, outdoors-minded population whose dogs join them on the trail and the river. To the south, the Bitterroot Valley adds horses, small acreages and working ranches to the caseload.
The Flathead Valley Kalispell, Whitefish and the towns around Flathead Lake sit at the gateway to Glacier National Park. Practices here care for the pets of close-knit communities whose lives revolve around the lake, the ski slopes and the backcountry.
Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley Anchored by Montana State University, the Gallatin Valley pairs a lively university town with deep agricultural roots. Veterinary work spans companion animals, equine patients and livestock, and the Bridger and Gallatin ranges put hiking, skiing and fly fishing close to home.
Helena and Great Falls The state capital and the city on the Missouri River serve central Montana’s towns and farming communities. Practices see a steady mix of family pets and working animals, with the Rocky Mountain Front shaping weekends outdoors.
Every veterinarian practicing in Montana needs a state license, issued through the Montana Board of Veterinary Medicine. Applicants generally need a degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school, a passing score on the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination and a pass on the state’s open-book jurisprudence exam covering Montana’s veterinary laws and rules. Vets already licensed elsewhere also provide verification of each license they hold or have held. Confirm the current requirements with the board before you apply.
Graduates of veterinary schools outside the AVMA-accredited system can qualify through the ECFVG or PAVE certification programs, and our international veterinary opportunities explain how we support vets trained abroad who are seeking US roles.
The profession has a strong footprint here. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates for May 2023, Montana employed 490 veterinarians, and its concentration of veterinary jobs was nearly twice the national average.
Starting your license application well ahead of a planned start date gives transcripts, exam scores and verifications time to reach the board, and it fits neatly alongside arranging housing for a move. Before signing an offer, having your contract reviewed makes terms such as non-compete clauses, production pay and benefits clear from the start.
