Veterinary Jobs in Oregon

Vet Jobs in Oregon

Oregon gives veterinarians a wide choice of settings, from companion animal hospitals in the Portland metro to ranch calls east of the Cascades. Vet jobs in Oregon cover general practice, emergency and urgent care, specialty referral medicine and exotics, with many roles in general practice veterinary medicine serving close-knit client communities.

Pets are part of everyday life across the state and often go with their owners on trails, beaches and riverbanks. Many clients build long relationships with the veterinary teams who care for their animals.

Oregon’s regions each shape the veterinary day

Oregon’s geography shapes its veterinary work. The regions described here are among the main areas where vets build their careers, and the state also includes others, such as the ranching communities of Eastern Oregon.

Portland metro. The state’s largest population center includes Portland and suburbs such as Beaverton, Hillsboro and Lake Oswego. It supports busy small animal practices, 24-hour emergency hospitals and specialty referral services. Vets here enjoy a thriving food and coffee culture, leafy neighborhoods, and quick access to the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood.

Willamette Valley. The valley stretches south through Salem, Corvallis and Eugene. It combines growing residential communities with farms, nurseries, vineyards and horse properties, so companion animal medicine sits alongside mixed and large animal work. Corvallis is home to Oregon State University’s Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine. The valley’s wine country and college towns give daily life a relaxed, welcoming rhythm.

Central Oregon. Bend, Redmond and the surrounding high desert are home to active pet owners whose dogs share their outdoor pursuits. The wider rural area adds equine and livestock clients. Sunny days, skiing on Mount Bachelor, rafting and mountain biking make the region a favorite base for people who love the outdoors.

Southern Oregon. In the Rogue Valley, including Medford, Ashland and Grants Pass, practices serve pet owners in town alongside rural, equine and hobby farm clients. The region is known for its orchards and vineyards, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, the Rogue River and easy trips to Crater Lake National Park.

Oregon Coast. From Astoria to Brookings, coastal towns are served by community-focused practices where vets see a wide variety of patients and come to know clients over many years. Wide beaches, tide pools, fishing harbors and dramatic headlands are never far away.

Licensing and practical steps for Oregon veterinarians

To practice, you need an Oregon license issued by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board. The process broadly involves the following:

  • proof of graduation from an AVMA-accredited program, or completion of the ECFVG or PAVE program if you graduated from a non-accredited school
  • official NAVLE scores
  • verification of any licenses you have held elsewhere
  • passing Oregon’s open-book Jurisprudence Exam and Regional Disease Test, which are based on state statutes and rules

Requirements can change, so confirm the current process directly with the board before you apply.

The profession is projected to keep growing in the state. Oregon Employment Department data recorded 1,742 veterinarians employed statewide in 2024 and projects 23.7% growth by 2034.
