Veterinary Jobs in Utah

Vet Jobs in Utah

Utah combines a deep-rooted ranching and farming heritage with fast-growing cities and suburbs, and its veterinary profession reflects both sides of that story. Vet jobs in Utah range from busy companion animal hospitals along the Wasatch Front to mixed and large animal work in agricultural valleys and practices serving the sunlit communities of the south.

Outdoor life shapes much of the caseload here. Many clients spend their weekends hiking, camping and skiing with their dogs, so Utah veterinarians see plenty of active, well-loved pets alongside the preventive care, dentistry and surgery at the heart of general practice veterinary roles.

From the Wasatch Front to Red Rock Country

Salt Lake Valley is the state’s largest metro area, with Salt Lake City at its center. Veterinarians here work within a dense network of small animal hospitals, emergency services and specialty care, serving a diverse urban and suburban client base. The Wasatch Mountains rise just beyond the city, with canyon trails and ski resorts close enough for an after-work outing.

Davis and Weber Counties stretch north toward Ogden, taking in family-oriented communities where companion animal practice is the mainstay. Ogden’s historic downtown, the Great Salt Lake shoreline and the mountain recreation of Ogden Valley give the area a relaxed, outdoorsy character.

Utah Valley, home to Provo, Orem and Lehi, is known for its young families, growing technology sector and two major universities, Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University. Practices here serve busy households and their pets, with Provo Canyon and Mount Timpanogos as a spectacular backdrop.

Cache Valley, centered on Logan and Utah State University, has a long agricultural tradition that brings dairy and livestock work alongside small animal care. The valley offers a close-knit college-town community surrounded by farmland and mountains.

Southern Utah, including St. George and Cedar City, pairs a warm desert climate with easy access to Zion National Park and the red rock country beyond. Veterinarians here care for the pets of families and retirees, with rural livestock work in the surrounding communities. These are just some of the areas where Utah vets practice, and the Wasatch Back, the Uinta Basin and central Utah’s farming towns each have their own character too.

Getting Licensed and Settled in Utah

Practicing in Utah requires a state license issued by the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL), which works alongside the state’s Veterinary Board. The Utah veterinarian license requirements cover graduation from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college or ECFVG certification, a passing score on the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination, and an experience requirement. That experience can come from hours completed under a Utah veterinary intern license or from 1,000 hours of practice as a licensed veterinarian outside the state. Veterinarians already licensed elsewhere in the US may qualify for licensure by endorsement, and DOPL issues a separate controlled substance license. Always confirm the current details directly with DOPL before you apply.

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics wage estimates for May 2023, Utah had around 610 employed veterinarians, with an annual mean wage of $128,940.

Because licensing involves transcripts, exam scores and experience verification, starting the paperwork early, ideally while you are still interviewing, keeps your planned start date on track. We also recommend having your employment contract reviewed by a lawyer before you sign. If you trained outside the US, the ECFVG pathway is recognized in Utah, and our support for internationally trained vets explains how we can help.
