JOB-4667

The Job Opportunity:
A well-established, community-focused veterinary practice is seeking a Full-Time Medical Director to lead its collaborative veterinary team. This opportunity is open to either a small animal veterinarian or a mixed animal veterinarian, providing the incoming doctor with the flexibility to build a caseload around their individual experience, interests, and professional goals.

A veterinarian who prefers companion animal medicine can focus primarily on dogs and cats, while a veterinarian who enjoys mixed animal practice can incorporate small farm animal and livestock medicine into their caseload. The hospital is excited to support the strengths of the individual doctor rather than requiring the incoming Medical Director to fit into a predetermined style of practice.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced veterinarian who wants to remain actively involved in clinical medicine while also helping shape medical standards, mentor colleagues, strengthen hospital culture, and guide the continued growth of the practice.

The Medical Director will have meaningful clinical and leadership autonomy, with the ability to foster a hospital environment centered around evidence-based medicine, teamwork, mentorship, and exceptional patient care. An experienced support team and broader network of veterinary and operational professionals provide additional resources while allowing the Medical Director to lead at the local level.

A Monday through Friday schedule with no on-call responsibilities provides an attractive combination of professional leadership, clinical variety, and work-life balance.

Practice Information:
This established, full-service veterinary hospital has served its surrounding community for many years, developing lasting relationships with clients and providing compassionate care for both companion animals and livestock.

The hospital has also been recently and beautifully remodeled, providing an updated, welcoming, and comfortable environment for patients, clients, and the veterinary team. The refreshed facility combines the warmth and personality of an established community practice with a modern clinical environment designed to support high-quality veterinary medicine.

The practice is uniquely positioned to welcome either a small animal DVM or a mixed animal DVM. A veterinarian interested exclusively in companion animal medicine can develop a rewarding small animal caseload, while a doctor passionate about mixed animal practice can continue caring for companion animals while incorporating livestock and small farm animal medicine. The goal is to give the Medical Director the flexibility and clinical autonomy to practice the type of medicine they find most rewarding.

The hospital offers a broad range of general practice, diagnostic, medical, dental, and surgical services, with clinical resources that include:

  • In-house laboratory diagnostics
  • Digital radiography
  • Ultrasonography
  • Dentistry
  • General surgery
  • Preventive and wellness medicine
  • Small animal medical and surgical care
  • Pocket pet care
  • Small farm animal and livestock medicine for veterinarians interested in mixed practice

These capabilities allow veterinarians to thoroughly evaluate cases and confidently manage a diverse patient population while maintaining continuity of care.

The hospital’s weekday schedule and absence of routine on-call responsibilities further support a sustainable environment for a veterinarian who wants meaningful leadership responsibilities without sacrificing life outside of veterinary medicine.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Provide compassionate, evidence-based medical and surgical care
  • Maintain a small animal or mixed animal caseload based on the doctor’s individual interests and experience
  • Establish, maintain, and continuously improve standards for medical quality and patient care
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for associate veterinarians
  • Encourage collaboration, case discussion, continuing education, and shared learning
  • Support the professional development of veterinarians and clinical team members
  • Foster a positive, respectful, accountable, and collaborative hospital culture
  • Partner with practice leadership on hospital goals, staffing, workflow, and continued growth
  • Help identify opportunities to expand or improve medical services based on community needs and the interests of the veterinary team
  • Perform general medicine, surgery, dentistry, and other procedures appropriate to experience
  • Utilize in-house laboratory diagnostics, digital radiography, ultrasonography, and other available resources for comprehensive case management
  • Provide small farm animal or livestock medicine when desired and appropriate to the Medical Director’s experience
  • Support thoughtful implementation of medical protocols and evidence-based best practices
  • Maintain high standards for medical records, client communication, patient safety, and professional ethics
  • Promote an environment where veterinarians maintain clinical autonomy while benefiting from collaboration and peer support
  • Build lasting relationships with clients and serve as a positive representative of the hospital within the community

Job Applicant Requirements:

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree, or equivalent
  • Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the state of practice
  • Professional experience in small animal or mixed animal veterinary medicine
  • Strong general medicine and surgical skills
  • An interest in clinical leadership, mentorship, and team development
  • The ability to establish high medical standards while supporting veterinarian autonomy
  • Strong communication, organization, and relationship-building skills
  • A collaborative and approachable leadership style
  • A commitment to evidence-based medicine and continuous improvement
  • An interest in developing veterinarians and helping team members achieve their professional goals
  • A desire to build a positive, respectful, and sustainable hospital culture

Both small animal and mixed animal veterinarians are encouraged to apply.  Mixed animal experience is not required. A veterinarian who prefers to focus entirely on companion animals can do so, while a veterinarian who enjoys the diversity of mixed practice will have the opportunity to incorporate small farm animal and livestock medicine into their caseload.

Previous Medical Director experience is welcomed but may not be required for a veterinarian who demonstrates strong clinical judgment, communication skills, leadership potential, and an interest in professional development.

Compensation & Benefits:
The organization offers competitive compensation designed to recognize the Medical Director’s clinical experience, leadership responsibilities, professional skills, and contributions to hospital success. Leadership incentives and additional financial opportunities may also be available.

Eligible veterinarians may receive a comprehensive benefits package that can include:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Paid parental leave
  • Continuing education allowance
  • Dedicated paid time for continuing education
  • Leadership development programs
  • Medical Director mentorship and professional coaching
  • Structured opportunities for career advancement
  • Professional license and membership support
  • Professional liability coverage
  • Retirement plan with employer contribution
  • Potential equity and long-term financial opportunities
  • Relocation assistance when applicable
  • Employee pet care benefits
  • Mental health and wellness resources
  • Team recognition and incentive programs

The organization is committed to giving its Medical Director the resources and autonomy needed to build a rewarding, sustainable career. Whether the incoming leader’s passion is small animal medicine, mixed animal medicine, surgery, leadership, or a combination of these areas, the position offers the flexibility to make the role their own while leading a recently remodeled, established community hospital into its next chapter.
