Alabama brings together fast-growing cities, a long farming tradition and a stretch of Gulf shoreline, and its veterinary work reflects all three. Companion animal medicine anchors the metro areas, where general practice veterinary jobs form the backbone of the profession, while cattle, horses and the state’s large poultry industry keep food animal and mixed practice firmly part of the picture. We recruit for vet jobs in Alabama in permanent roles on full-time, part-time and flexible schedules.
The profession here has deep roots. The state is home to two colleges of veterinary medicine, at Auburn University and Tuskegee University, which give Alabama a strong academic base and a steady flow of continuing education, research and referral expertise.
Alabama has more regions than a short summary can cover, from the Wiregrass in the southeast to the lakes and hills of the northeast. These four give a sense of the variety.
Birmingham and central Alabama. The state’s largest metro area supports busy suburban small animal hospitals alongside emergency and specialty care, serving a large and loyal pet-owning population. Suburbs such as Hoover and Vestavia Hills sit minutes from wooded ridges, and Red Mountain Park, a lively food scene and college football weekends keep life outside the clinic full.
Huntsville and the Tennessee Valley. Home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville is a growing hub for aerospace and research, and its young families keep companion animal practices busy. Toward Decatur and the Shoals, small animal work sits alongside mixed and large animal practice, with the Tennessee River and Lake Guntersville close at hand for boating and fishing.
Mobile and the Gulf Coast. Mobile’s historic neighborhoods and the communities of Baldwin County across the bay support a strong base of companion animal practices. Life here revolves around the water, from sailing and fishing on Mobile Bay to the beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, and the city’s long-standing Mardi Gras tradition fills the calendar each winter.
Montgomery, Auburn and the Black Belt. The state capital and the university communities of Auburn and Tuskegee blend city practice with academic veterinary medicine. The fertile Black Belt that sweeps across the region is cattle and farming country with a valued place for mixed and large animal vets, while Lake Martin and Montgomery’s civil rights heritage add to what the area offers.
Practicing here requires an Alabama license, issued by Alabama’s state veterinary board. The process broadly involves verifying your veterinary degree, a passing NAVLE score and an exam on the state’s veterinary practice act, with license verification for vets already practicing in other states. Requirements and fees are updated from time to time, so confirm the current steps with the board before you apply.
Graduates of veterinary schools outside the US typically complete an educational equivalency program, such as the AVMA’s ECFVG certificate, before licensing. Our support for internationally trained vets explains how we help vets trained abroad find US roles.
According to Alabama Department of Workforce estimates, based on May 2024 federal survey data with wages aged to March 2025, the state had an estimated 1,150 employed veterinarians earning a mean annual wage of $115,115.
