Veterinary Jobs in Pennsylvania

Vet jobs in Pennsylvania, from the Delaware Valley to Lake Erie

Pennsylvania brings together two strong veterinary traditions. In the east, dense suburbs support busy companion animal hospitals, referral centers and emergency services. Across the rest of the Commonwealth, farmland, dairy herds and horse country keep mixed and large animal practice firmly rooted. Vet jobs in Pennsylvania reflect that range, from general practice veterinarian roles to urgent care, specialty medicine and hospital leadership.

The state also has a deep academic heritage. The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in Philadelphia, together with its New Bolton Center large animal campus in Chester County, anchors a professional community that places real value on clinical depth and continuing education.

Five regions that shape Pennsylvania practice life

Each part of the state brings its own caseload and pace. These five regions are a starting point rather than a complete map.

Philadelphia and its suburbs take in Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware and Chester counties, home to a high concentration of small animal hospitals, specialty referral centers and 24-hour emergency services. Engaged, well-informed clients and access to advanced diagnostics make for varied, rewarding medicine. Off duty, historic city neighborhoods, Main Line towns and open countryside all sit within easy reach.

The Lehigh Valley centers on Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, a well-connected metro where long-established community practices sit alongside modern multi-doctor hospitals. Life here combines a small-city pace with straightforward access to both Philadelphia and New York City.

South Central Pennsylvania, around Harrisburg, Lancaster and York, is set among some of the most productive farmland in the eastern United States. Lancaster County’s strong dairy and agricultural economy means food animal and mixed practice thrive alongside companion animal care, and market towns along the Susquehanna River give the region a close community feel.

Central Pennsylvania revolves around State College and Penn State, with rural practices serving farms, equine owners and family pets across the surrounding valleys. Ridges, state forests and trout streams define life outside the clinic.

Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania offer a full spectrum of companion animal care, from neighborhood clinics to specialty and emergency hospitals, while outlying counties add mixed practice. Pittsburgh’s rivers, hills and distinctive neighborhoods give the city its own character, and the region reaches north to Erie and the Lake Erie shoreline.

Licensing and planning your move to the Commonwealth

Practicing here requires a Pennsylvania license issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Veterinary Medicine. As set out in the board’s veterinarian licensure snapshot in 2026, the main components are graduation from an approved veterinary school (or certification of equivalence through the ECFVG or PAVE programs), a passing score on the NAVLE, and 30 hours of continuing education for each two-year renewal. Veterinarians with five years of clinical practice in another state can apply by reciprocity, and Pennsylvania’s Act 41 also allows endorsement of qualifying out-of-state licenses. Requirements are updated from time to time, so confirm the current details directly with the board before you apply.

Starting your application early lets the license arrive in step with your notice period and start date. It also leaves time for having your contract reviewed properly before you sign, which is especially valuable for leadership roles with production pay, non-compete terms or benefits packages. We also help vets trained outside the US understand the route to practicing in the United States.
