When a case calls for advanced imaging, complex surgery or a dedicated expert’s opinion, primary care teams refer it on, and specialty veterinarian jobs are built around receiving that trust. Board-certified surgeons, internists, oncologists, cardiologists, neurologists, radiologists, anesthesiologists, dermatologists, ophthalmologists and criticalists work up these patients in depth and return each one to its family and referring veterinarian with a clear, considered plan.
Specialty practice takes several forms. Multi-discipline hospitals house many services under one roof, often beside a 24-hour emergency and critical care unit, while single-discipline practices concentrate on one field such as oncology, ophthalmology or dermatology. Each model is defined by depth: the equipment, expertise and support to pursue a diagnosis thoroughly and treat at an advanced level.
A specialist’s week typically blends scheduled consultations, procedures and rechecks. Referral histories, lab work and prior imaging arrive ahead of each appointment, so consultations start from a detailed picture and move quickly toward diagnostics such as ultrasound, CT, MRI, endoscopy or advanced laboratory testing, depending on the discipline. Surgeons plan and perform orthopedic, soft tissue and neurological procedures, oncologists design and refine treatment protocols over months, and criticalists direct intensive care for the most unstable patients alongside the emergency team.
Collaboration runs through the day. In a multi-discipline hospital, a neurologist and radiologist review an MRI together, or a surgeon and oncologist agree on a plan for removing a mass. Credentialed veterinary technicians, some holding Veterinary Technician Specialist credentials of their own, anchor the nursing care, and hospitals with training programs bring interns and residents into rounds. Clear communication completes the picture, with detailed reports that keep referring veterinarians informed and involved in ongoing care.
Board certification follows veterinary school with an intensive period of postgraduate training, usually an internship followed by a residency supervised by diplomates of the relevant specialty college. Candidates then meet the college’s credentialing requirements and pass its certifying examination to earn diplomate status. As of 2026, the American Veterinary Medical Association recognizes 22 veterinary specialty organizations covering 48 distinct specialties, and more than 16,500 veterinarians have achieved diplomate status in one or more of them. Specialists also hold a veterinary license in the state where they practice.
Once boarded, specialists shape their careers in many directions. Clinical practice sits at the heart of the field, and experienced diplomates often go on to lead a service, head a department, mentor residents or take on medical director responsibilities within a specialty hospital. Others combine clinical work with teaching, research or industry roles. Board-certified positions sit within our specialist and diplomate roles, and vets trained or certified outside the US will find support for international vets seeking to practice here.
